How do I check my blood sugar level?

Follow your physician’s recommendation and the information that comes with the glucose meter. In general, you will follow the steps below. Different meters work differently, so make sure you ask your doctor for recommendations specially for you.  Wash your hands and dry them thoroughly prior to testing.

Use an alcohol pad to clean the place that you're going to prick. For the majority of glucose meters, you will prick your fingertip. With some meters you can also use your forearm, thigh or the fleshy part of your hand. Consult with your physician as to the area you should use with your meter.

Prick yourself with a sterile lancet to get a drop of blood. If you prick your fingertip, prick it on one side, not on the pad. That way should be easier and not as painful.

Place the drop of blood on the test strip. Follow the instructions for inserting the test strip into your glucose meter. The meter will give you a number for your blood sugar level.

What about smoking and alcohol?

You should stop smoking as soon as you can. It's should be okay to drink alcohol in moderation. It's advisable not to have more than about 1 drink per day with a meal. A serving is defined as 4 ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer or 1.5 ounces of hard liquor. Drinking on an empty stomach risks causing a drop in your blood sugar level. Consult with your physician about how much alcohol is safe for you to consume with your type of diabetes.

Will exercising help my blood sugar level?

Yes. Physical activity is particularly beneficial for people who have diabetes as it can help the body better utilize insulin, resulting in a lower blood sugar level.

Exercise is good for your heart, your cholesterol levels, your blood pressure and your weight--all factors that influence your chance of heart attack and stroke.

Physical activity also seems to make people feel more positive about themselves and less stressed.

Consult with your physicial about starting an exercise program. He or she can assist you in making a plan to suit your needs.
